New
kiln project on target
BOSSES
at Castle Cement confirmed this week that work on the new kiln at
its Padeswood works is on schedule and due to provide North Wales
with the most modern, efficient cement making process in Europe.
Following
a meeting to discuss progress on the £54 million project,
Castle’s Production Director and Chairman of CBI North Wales, Tony
Allan said everything is on schedule for the first quarter of 2005
opening of Kiln 4.
“The
new conditioning and preheater tower, which is now being constructed
and will ensure dust does not escape into the atmosphere, will help
contribute to a 75 per cent reduction in emissions.
“This
is excellent news for everyone striving to work towards a cleaner
environment for North Wales. This new process will be like nothing
seen before and I and my colleagues are very proud that we have been
able to bring these environmental improvements to the area whilst
safeguarding hundreds of local jobs with the development of this
project.”
The
new process will replace existing ones on the site and cut back
drastically on emissions while making a substantial contribution to
meeting Wales’ strategies for the environment and waste.
Alternative
fuels can be burnt cleanly and efficiently as part of the
cement-making process and is a key element in cement industry
efforts to help the Government meet its obligations to reduce
greenhouse gasses.
Tony
Allan added: “The new
kiln will significantly cut back on the emission of acid rain
gasses, will use energy more efficiently and also make use of
materials which would otherwise have to be placed in landfill sites.
We are working diligently to help the environment.”
